Looking Back and Ahead: 6 Achievements and New Offerings at MIU
By: Mitchell Hollander, M.D., CEO
The close of another year is always a time of reflection and celebration. Where have we been and where are we going?
Michigan Institute of Urology has been part of the fabric of this community for a long time. We are extremely proud of our history as the longest free-standing and largest urology group in Michigan.
Guided by the commitment and collaboration of our physicians, patients, and community, our ability to treat all conditions of the urology tract continues to advance.
We’re excited to share some of the latest services and innovations in case you didn’t know about them.
2024: Our Winning Achievements
Following are our highlights of an exceptional 2024.
- New treatments at our REDEEM sexual wellness center. In November 2023, MIU opened REDEEM, a specialty sexual wellness and aesthetics clinic for men and women. The center in Birmingham, Mich., added two key treatment offerings in 2024. First, REDEEM introduced Biote bioidentical hormone replacement therapy for women and men, a treatment that creates hormones identical to the hormones your body makes. More recently, REDEEM introduced the Emsella Chair, a urinary incontinence treatment that stimulates and strengthens the pelvic floor muscles using electromagnetic technology.
- Our Interventional Radiology (IR) Center expansion. Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that relies on advanced imaging techniques, such as ultrasounds, x-rays, CAT scans, and MRIs, as an alternative to open surgery. We opened our IR Center in December 2023 so our providers could use this technology to perform minimally invasive artery embolization – an image-guided procedure that blocks blood vessels. In 2024, our IR Center recruited a second physician, John Fallucca, and added numerous procedures. In addition to prostate artery embolization (PAE), the center now offers varicoceles treatment for male infertility, uterine fibroid embolization, ovarian vein embolization, and hemorrhoid artery embolization.
- Our new online look. If you’re reading this blog, you likely noticed that we relaunched our website in 2024 with patient-friendly upgrades. Key among these features is our convenient patient portal, a one-stop spot for checking test results, reviewing medical history, and communicating with your doctor. We’ve also added an online library of informative videos and webinars designed to answer your questions across a range of conditions. Lastly, we added a clinical trials page that lists our upcoming medical research by condition, through which patients can explore and enroll. The new site also includes wall-to-wall enhancements from easier navigation to more clearly described patient conditions and treatments.
What’s In Store for 2025
Here are a few new offerings we look forward to sharing with you in 2025:
- More advantages at our Ambulatory Surgery Center. We’re treating more men with prostate cancer at our modern Ambulatory Surgery Centers in Troy and Utica, which offer streamlined same-day surgical care as an alternative to hospital visits. Two procedures we’d like to highlight in 2025 are low-dose rate (LDR) brachytherapy and Pluvicto. LDR brachytherapy is a procedure in which tiny radioactive seeds are placed in the prostate to fight cancer in just one or two treatments. Pluvicto is a targeted radioactive medicine designed to shrink prostate cancer cells.
- Providing confidential drug treatments. Our In-Office Medication Dispensary continues to grow. For men taking erectile dysfunction or prostate cancer medications, we provide consistent pricing and help with paperwork to get financial assistance for the out-of-pocket expenses related to some prostate cancer medications. Patients have two convenient and confidential ways to receive their medicine: visiting the In-Office Medication Dispensary at our Troy Town Center office or requesting direct mail-order service if insurance permits.
- Advancements in our genetic testing program. An estimated one in 10 cancer cases is passed down from generation to generation. If you want to know if you carry a genetic risk for cancer, our Precision GU genetic testing program offers personalized results. This simple blood test seeks changes in your genetic profile that predict your risk of cancer and other diseases, as well as determining if your child is at risk. The test is confidential – processed at our labs – and customized for you.
If you are an MIU patient or member of our supportive community, thank you for contributing to our success. We hope to see you and many more patients so that together, we can more successfully prevent and treat urological illnesses.
