Michael’s Solution for Incontinence After Prostate Cancer Surgery
Following surgery for prostate cancer in 2011, Michael experienced urine leakage. Unlike some men, it wasn’t improving. The available treatment options didn’t interest him. But more than a decade later, at age 78, Michael read about the EMSELLA Chair and decided to give it a try. “I thought that even if it improved the leakage partially, it would be worth it.”
The EMSELLA Chair uses high-intensity technology to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles. A patient sits in the chair, fully clothed, while the device performs 11,200 Kegel contractions within 30 minutes. These contractions retrain and strengthen weakened pelvic floor muscles, restoring muscle control and improving urinary incontinence.
Michael had become accustomed to wearing a pad to contain his urine leakage on the job as a CPA, and in his free time, renovating his house and the houses of his friends. “I would have to change the pad several times a day, especially if I was very active. I always carried extra pads with me. If I was in the car or a store, I wouldn’t be able to change it as quickly as I’d like. That was frustrating.”
Michael was given the first EMSELLA Chair session at no charge to see if he was OK with it. Afterwards, he immediately scheduled six sessions over the next few weeks in the hopes that his urine leakage would soon become a distant memory.
“Each session was painless and simple,” he says. “All I had to do was sit in the chair, fully clothed, and let it go to work.” As he read a magazine, Michael says he felt “kind of like a vibration, just a tingling sensation. It didn’t hurt at all.”
Halfway through his treatment schedule, Michael was disappointed to not have seen an improvement yet. “But Madison assured me that it can take some time for the muscles to show the effect, and she was right.” By the end of his treatment schedule, Michael did see an improvement, and said the leakage continued to lessen as more weeks passed.
“Now I can go pretty much all day without changing a pad. Some days I notice more leakage than other days, but overall, I’m very satisfied and glad I did it.”
