Dr. Johnston is a partner in the Michigan Institute of Urology, and an Associate Professor at Oakland University/Beaumont School of Medicine. He grew up in northern California and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Davis. He received his medical degree from Albany Medical College, then returned to the University of California, Davis for his Surgery/Urology residency.
After residency, Dr. Johnston completed one of the first dedicated fellowship training programs in robotic surgery in 2003-2004 at the University of Michigan.
As a professor, Dr. Johnston has won two teaching awards and performs research on improving surgical outcomes through biomedical innovations- a passion that has led to more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, presentations at national/world meetings, iPhone apps, a US Patent (US 7,591,817), and a new surgical device in use today.
When not working or spending time with his wife and four active boys, Dr. Johnston enjoys golf and running with his dog Blue, all while preserving time to make an occasional wood-fired pizza.
Dr. Johnston is board-certified as a urologist.
