The Best Supplements for Kidney and Bladder Health
At the Michigan Institute of Urology, we always look for ways to help our patients improve their kidney and bladder health. One way to do this is by taking supplements that support kidney and bladder health. In this blog post, we review supplements for kidney and bladder health.
But first, a word of caution. Some supplements can have a negative impact on your kidneys and reduce their ability to function correctly. Using supplements if you have kidney disease may be unsafe. Some supplements may worsen kidney disease. Talk to your doctor about what you should and should not take and how much.
Vitamin D and Calcium
A side effect of some kidney conditions is weak bones. So, it’s important to get enough calcium and vitamin D. However, there’s a risk of harming your kidneys if you get too much vitamin D and calcium. We recommend consulting your doctor before taking these supplements.
B Vitamins
Of the eight B vitamins, three are crucial to maintaining healthy red blood cells and avoiding anemia: B6, B12, and folic acid. Ask your doctor if these are right for you and how much.
Iron
Not getting enough iron can lead to iron deficiency anemia. Iron supplements can boost your ability to absorb more iron and enhance red blood cells. Ask your doctor how much iron is best for you and if a supplement is right for you.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps keep bones and teeth strong, helps wounds heal, and supports the immune system. It’s a powerful antioxidant that helps the body manage the inflammation that often develops if you have chronic kidney disease. However, too much vitamin C can lead to kidney stones. Ask your doctor how much is safe for you.
Some doctors suggest avoiding vitamin C supplements and instead getting the necessary amount from food, particularly if you suffer from a leaky bladder. High-dose C supplements can worsen the condition. You’ll find healthy sources of vitamin C in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, tomatoes, citrus fruits, and green and red peppers.
Superfoods
The National Kidney Foundation recommends these five superfoods to nourish your kidneys:

- Los-phosphorus cheese
The American Urological Association recommends these foods for a healthy bladder:
- Pears
- Bananas
- Green beans
- Winter squash

What About Cranberries and UTIs?
Consuming cranberries is often considered a way to reduce the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). In 2020, the Food & Drug Administration reported limited scientific evidence that 500 mg of a daily cranberry supplement could reduce the risk of UTIs.
